“De ce vin si jolie”

Jacques Brel

This wallpaper was first printed at the end of the 18th century by the French Manufacture Duserre, during the great age of hand-block printed decorative papers in France.

At that moment, French wallpaper was moving beyond simple dominoté sheets and becoming something far more refined: repeating patterns designed not only for walls, but also for furnishing fabrics, screens, and interior panels. Vine motifs like this were especially popular, part neoclassical ornament, part direct reference to the cultivated garden and the pleasure of domestic life. Grapevines carried both decorative and symbolic weight: abundance, hospitality, celebration, and the quiet luxury of a well-lived house.

This design belongs to that world. The climbing vine, curling tendrils, and small clustered grapes create a pattern that feels both architectural and alive, formal enough for an 18th-century salon, but soft enough to sit comfortably beside painted woodwork, linen, and candlelight. It reflects the French taste of the period for natural forms disciplined by elegant repetition.

The title, De ce vin si jolie, borrowed from Jacques Brel, felt inevitable.

Carefully redrawn and reproduced using traditional hand-printing techniques, each impression is printed by hand using carved pear wood blocks, preserving the softness, texture, and slight irregularities that machine printing cannot imitate.

Printed with non-toxic pigments and traditional paints, every roll carries the mark of the hand and the depth of true block printing.

Available in a range of colourways, from soft mineral greens to richer decorative palettes.

An 18th-century vine brought back to life. For interiors that prefer warmth, memory, and beauty.
