"It is better to be grass." — Hugo Claus
This pattern was drawn from an original design sketch by a Mr. Annsens of Ghent, discovered through the antiquarian bookshop De Blinde Reiziger. The drawing dates to around 1910, placing it squarely in the early Art Deco period — a moment when Belgian designers were quietly producing some of the most considered decorative work in Europe.
Printed by hand using four carved pearwood blocks, each pressed individually into distemper paint made from chalk, hide glue, and non-toxic pigments. Five colours means four passes, five drying times, five chances for the layers to build into something richer than any single one of them. The result is a matte, velvety surface with the depth and slight irregularity that only hand printing produces.
A natural fit for a living room or bedroom where pattern and colour are meant to be lived with rather than just looked at.
