This wallpaper was made from the ground it stands on.
For Kunst & Zwalm 2025, we sourced bricks from Van De Moortel, a Flemish brickmaker with deep roots in the Zwalm valley, and ground them ourselves into pigment — smashed, ground, washed — to make the paint. The wallpaper was then printed in the pattern of bricks, in the colour of bricks, and hung on a wall of bricks made from the same clay. A wallpaper is supposed to perform a fiction: this wall is something other than it is. This one refuses that fiction entirely.
Printed by hand using carved pearwood blocks pressed into distemper paint made from chalk, hide glue, and locally sourced brick pigment. There is no other wallpaper quite like it, and only a very limited stock remains.
A piece for anyone who wants something on their wall that is genuinely from somewhere.
This sample is a real piece of the wallpaper, 26 × 25 cm, at €15 rather than the usual €4.50 — a reflection of the material, the process, and the story behind it.
