Sample blockprinted "No Alarms and No Surprises" wallpaper 26cm x 25cm
No Alarms and No Surprises
Originally printed around 1850 by Oliver Sage in New England, this wallpaper sits somewhere between the last years of early American block-printed papers and the decorative ideals that would later define the Arts and Crafts movement.
Its dense floral structure, an almost textile-like repea, feels domestic rather than grand. It was made for lived-in rooms: parlours, bedrooms, upstairs halls. Not for display, but for atmosphere. There is something deeply familiar in these patterns, nature brought indoors, repeated quietly across the walls, creating warmth rather than spectacle.
Although it predates William Morris and the formal Arts and Crafts movement, it shares that same belief: ornament should come from observation of nature, from craftsmanship, and from materials that age beautifully. It belongs to that same visual language of honest decoration.
The title, No Alarms and No Surprises, borrowed from Radiohead, felt right for exactly that reason — a quiet kind of beauty, restrained and enduring.
This design was carefully redrawn and is printed by hand using carved pear wood blocks, staying close to the original rhythm and scale. Block printing gives the surface its depth: small irregularities, slight shifts, the softness of real pigment pressed into paper rather than mechanically applied.
Printed with non-toxic pigments and traditional paints, every roll carries those subtle differences that make hand-printed wallpaper feel alive.
Available in a range of colourways, from softer historical tones to richer contemporary interpretations.
Prices start at €60 per square meter.
